Calathea majestica ‘White Star’ is a striking tropical houseplant loved for its long, elegant leaves decorated with fine white and pale pink stripes against deep green foliage. The undersides of the leaves develop rich purple tones, making this an impressive statement plant for a warm, humid room.

Scientific Name
Goeppertia majestica ‘White Star’

This plant is still widely sold under its former botanical name, Calathea majestica ‘White Star’.

Common Name(s)
White Star Calathea, Prayer Plant

Origin
The species is native to tropical South America, where it grows beneath the warm, humid forest canopy.

Light
Prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves and fade their distinctive markings. It can tolerate slightly lower light levels but may grow more slowly.

Water
Keep the soil consistently lightly moist, allowing the top layer to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid allowing the plant to completely dry out or sit in water. Calatheas can be sensitive to chemicals and minerals in tap water, so rainwater or filtered water is ideal where possible.

Humidity
Prefers high humidity and will appreciate a humid room, plant cabinet or position near other houseplants. Keep away from radiators and other sources of hot, dry air.

Soil
Use a rich but well-draining houseplant mix that retains some moisture. Adding perlite and fine orchid bark can help maintain good drainage and airflow around the roots.

Food
Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser diluted to half strength. Reduce feeding during autumn and winter.

Temperature
Prefers temperatures between 18–27°C. Protect from cold draughts and sudden temperature changes, and avoid temperatures below 15°C.

Pet-safe
Yes, Calatheas and Goeppertias are generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs.

Sprouts Top Tips
Brown or crispy leaf edges are often a sign that the air is too dry or the plant is reacting to minerals in tap water. Increasing humidity and switching to rainwater or filtered water can help keep the foliage looking its best.

Extras
Like other members of the prayer plant family, ‘White Star’ moves its leaves throughout the day in response to changing light levels. Its dramatic striped foliage makes it particularly effective as a statement plant.

Did You Know?
Although still commonly known as a Calathea, this species has been reclassified into the genus Goeppertia. You’ll therefore see it labelled as both Calathea majestica ‘White Star’ and Goeppertia majestica ‘White Star’.
