Drimiopsis kirkii, commonly known as the Giant Squill Plant, is an unusual bulbous houseplant with fleshy, lance-shaped leaves patterned with distinctive dark green spots. Easy-going and full of character, it produces delicate flower spikes covered in small white to greenish flowers and makes an interesting addition to a collection of unusual houseplants.
Scientific Name
Drimiopsis kirkii
This plant is also classified as Ledebouria kirkii.
Common Name(s)
Giant Squill Plant, Leopard Lily
Origin
Native to eastern and southern Africa, where it grows in warm, seasonally dry environments.
Light
Prefers bright, indirect light and can tolerate some gentle direct sunlight. Good light helps maintain the distinctive spotting on the foliage. Avoid prolonged, intense midday sun.
Water
Water when the top few centimetres of soil have dried, allowing excess water to drain freely. Reduce watering during autumn and winter when growth slows. Avoid keeping the soil constantly wet, as the bulbs can be susceptible to rot.
Humidity
Average household humidity is suitable. This plant does not require particularly high humidity and should be kept somewhere with good airflow.
Soil
Use a well-draining soil mix. A houseplant or cactus and succulent compost with added perlite or grit works well. Always use a pot with adequate drainage.
Food
Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser diluted to half strength. Reduce or stop feeding during autumn and winter.
Temperature
Prefers temperatures between 15–25°C. Protect from cold draughts and prolonged exposure to low temperatures.
Pet-safe
No. Drimiopsis kirkii should be considered toxic if ingested, so keep it out of reach of pets and children.
Sprouts Top Tips
Allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings and don’t worry if growth slows or some leaves die back during the cooler months. The underground bulbs store energy, allowing the plant to produce fresh growth when conditions improve.
Extras
Mature plants can produce slender flower spikes carrying clusters of tiny white or greenish flowers. Over time, the bulbs can also produce offsets, gradually creating a fuller clump.
Did You Know?
The dark green markings on the leaves can vary depending on growing conditions. Brighter light generally produces more noticeable spotting, while plants grown in lower light may develop greener, less patterned leaves.
