Maranta leuconeura ‘Shadow’ is a striking variety of Prayer Plant grown for its beautifully patterned foliage. Its oval leaves feature rich shades of green with contrasting markings and darker tones, creating a dramatic, almost shadowed appearance. Compact and gently trailing as it matures, it makes a fantastic addition to shelves, desks and humid indoor plant collections.

Scientific Name
Maranta leuconeura ‘Shadow’

Common Name(s)
Shadow Prayer Plant, Prayer Plant

Origin
A cultivated variety of Maranta leuconeura, a species native to the tropical forests of Brazil, where it grows in warm, humid conditions beneath the forest canopy.

Light
Prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid strong direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves and fade their distinctive markings. It can tolerate slightly lower light levels, although growth may be slower.

Water
Keep the soil consistently lightly moist, allowing the top layer to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid allowing the plant to completely dry out or sit in water. Marantas can be sensitive to minerals in tap water, so rainwater or filtered water is ideal where possible.

Humidity
Prefers moderate to high humidity. Keep away from radiators and other sources of hot, dry air. Higher humidity can help prevent brown, crispy leaf edges.

Soil
Use a rich but well-draining houseplant mix that retains some moisture. Adding perlite and fine orchid bark can help maintain good drainage and airflow around the roots.

Food
Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser diluted to half strength. Reduce feeding during autumn and winter when growth slows.

Temperature
Prefers warm temperatures between 18–27°C. Protect from cold draughts and sudden temperature changes, and avoid prolonged temperatures below 15°C.

Pet-safe
Yes, Marantas are generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs.

Sprouts Top Tips
Consistent moisture and humidity will help keep ‘Shadow’ looking its best. If you notice brown or crispy leaf edges, check that the plant isn’t becoming too dry and consider switching to rainwater or filtered water.

Extras
Marantas have a naturally low-growing habit and can begin to trail as they mature, making them particularly attractive on a shelf or in a hanging pot. They may also produce small, delicate flowers when they’re happy.

Did You Know?
Marantas are known as Prayer Plants because their leaves move throughout the day and often lift upwards at night, resembling hands folded in prayer. This daily movement is known as nyctinasty and is triggered by changes in light.
